Timing the Foliage

Maple Tree at Jordan Pond

I'm often asked what the best time to visit Acadia to see the foliage is. Honestly, I don't think there's a bad time to go. I almost always go the day after Columbus Day (October 10th this year) and stay for a week. Is that the peak week for foliage? Sometimes it is, other times I've just missed the peak, and occasionally it's still peaking when I leave. But if you're looking for color, you won't be disappointed going any time in October.

The state of Maine has a foliage report that runs from about September 15th to the middle of October. Visit the Maine Foliage Report to get up to date reports on Acadia and the rest of the state. Currently, the whole state is green, meaning less than 10% of leaf drop in those areas. But that won't last long....
