One of the most beautiful, but still not heavily traveled, paths in Acadia is the Hemlock Road, near Sieur de Monts. I’ve photographed it on many occasions, but still find the most beautiful time is in the autumn, when the white birch trunks contrast with the yellows, reds, browns and greens of autumn and the path is carpeted with fallen leaves.

A perfect sunrise lights up an autumn sky on the quiet west side of Mount Desert Island, located just outside Acadia National Park.

On a normal day, Hadlock Falls is barely a trickle, as I found out to my disappointment several years ago. But after a heavy downpour, the Falls comes alive with a torrent of water gushing down into Hadlock Brook and flowing under Waterfall Bridge. Acadia is not known for its waterfalls, but Hadlock Falls is its most impressive one by far.

A stunning sunset dips below the horizon at Bass Harbor Marsh, filling the pools of water with a purple- orange glow- the best I’ve ever seen here in fifteen years.
